The River Valley is continuing to reach out to help feed each other during these times of need. With the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, dedicated helpers like Jeanne LaPointe, Regional School Unit 10 Nutrition Director continue to battle fall chills to collect food for those less fortunate.
On Saturday, the RSU 10 schools’ food van was again parked at the Aubuchon’s in Rumford, with the lofty goal of filling it with as much food as possible to help those who are feeling the effects of the loss of benefits.
Mrs. LaPointe says, “We are continuing to get together, help our community and show our River Valley Spirit!”
Kevin. Jamison, Aubuchon’s General Manager states, “We will get through this as a Community. We always do. Let's make this happen!”
Lapointe says, “Today was another successful day to combat food insecurity in our community. My lifelong friend Maggie Hopkins Raymond drove from Belfast to help out this morning. Thanks again Maggie!”
She adds, “A huge shout out to folks who came by with food donations, but also to the many who stopped by with additional generosity and left cash and generous checks!”
One such donator, Harvey Treadwell, came by with a $1000 gift to the food pantry. He said, “I just want to make sure the community has enough food for the Holidays!”
Ms LaPointe wanted to also point out Randy Chiasson, who stopped by, and Kathy Shea , “with a generous cash donation and a friendly hug for her old friend Maggie.”
The van will again be at Aubuchon's next Saturday, 15 November, from 9-noon with Peter Therriault helping out.
LaPointe states, “Thanksgiving items, such as stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, peas, potatoes, pumpkin, boiled onions, and fresh squash would be great additions for the pantry.”
She adds, “A huge thanks to our community for keeping the enthusiasm going!”
