Not The President, But The Country

For want of something to share, I searched the word 'President' in my poetry files and found zero hits, then I searched 'America' and found 415...here are a few in no particular order about America and americana:

This Old Flag

I know my flag is ragged and worn,

but I folded her up nice and neat,

thinking of all the pain she's borne,

in freezing winds and summer heat.

At Shiloh she stumbled in fields of corn,

at Gettysburg again nearly beat,

but we stood her back up so tall,

and again pledged to protect her all.

This Civil War wasn't her first test,

a hundred years earlier she flew,

showed the Union Jack who was best,

when our country was brand new.

At Valley Forge, men ragged dressed

starved and froze for her colors true.

When spring warmth finally came

"We are ready!" they did proclaim.

In the dark years of 1960's and 1970's,

we fought in that land called Vietnam.

Our cherished banner went across the seas.

She stood amid bullets, bombs, napalm,

and agent orange that stripped the trees.

She shivered as the B-52's continued to bomb.

Along came protesters one summer night.

I cried as our sacred flag burned bright.

She is singed around the edges and aged,

and truly deserves a rest so well earned.

But when you talk her down I get enraged,

and speak to her the words well learned;

"and for which she stands..." I am engaged,

and become infuriated when she is spurned.

Let's pledge to guard old glory even into hell

and help her come through the current crisis well.

Colonel Holman Mountain

I look out my window and see they are building windmills on Colonel Holman's Mountain. I sometimes wonder what's next for the wild state I cherish. They are building windmills and a fight is brewing down on Congress Street between the pure power people and nature's sanctity spokesmen. On Colonel Holman's Mountain they carry signs and banners saying "outsider's keep away," never knowing how he kept the redcoat Burgoyne at bay. I sometimes wonder what's next when we refuse to change and try new energy sources. We still rape land wrestled from those British forces. For the wild state I cherish has withstood attack before, but when her people fight so among themselves it hurts that much more.

Woolworth's

We always considered that

Our little mall was heaven,

One store for clothes, another for food.

Last but not least, the discount mecca -

Woolworths, our true destination.

On Check Day, the van was loaded,

Rain or shine, we drove with glee

To the Abbott Farm Plaza.

"Have to get shoes, socks, and pants,

Sam and Bobbi need something too!"

America

She's getting thread bare, and she's wearin' thin,

But she's in good shape, for the shape she's in...

-(c) SONG OF CASH INC

The singer said you had Been through the fire before. He believed you could take A whole lot more. I pray to God that is so, In this time of strife and war. The wolves are prowling, Hungry at your door. God let her stand tall again, The America I adore. More than a flag, On pole, tall to soar In the evening breeze. A certain pride she bore, Telling all life was good And would be forever more. America I believe in you, Deep within my core. I will stand to defend you from enemy's cannon roar and from your own people who forsake and abhor the lives lost and sacrificed for freedoms' galore. It is true dear lady, You have faced fire before. I believe you can take A whole lot more. I pray to God that is so, In this time of strife and war. Help me keep the wolves From outside your door.

...She's been through the fire before

and I believe she can take a whole lot more
